Epicenter: Three years promoting the digital transition in Europe

Rosa Porta,

The epicenter European project reaches the final stretch after 36 months of execution, with results that consolidate its role in the promotion of the green and digital transition of European SMEs and startups. Coordinated by the Digital Cluster of Catalonia, together with the Cluster Campania Bioscience (Italy) and Litmea (Lithuania), the initiative has aimed to promote cluster cooperation -cluster and accelerate innovative solutions with an impact on, mainly, 3 sectors: health, digital -fintech and agri -food.

In total, 134 SMEs and startup applications were received from 19 European countries to participate in the epicenter program.  Of these applications, 50 projects were selected with a total of 67 participating companies, which have had the support and collaboration of 25 large corporations.

In this framework, 6 partner companies in the digital cluster have played an active role: Acceralia, Group Salt and Vitum as participating SMEs, and Oracle, Sirt and Ialia Solutions as large companies. Other companies in the country that have also participated actively have been BCN Vision, Banco Mediolanum and Bodegues Torres.

Among the companies that have provided services and support for the project are Id Consortium, Worsley Acceleration Services, Gala Media and Play Your Brand, who have made a decisive contribution to the success of the epicenter.

The project has mobilized a global budget of € 1,437,947.32, of which € 1,050,000 have been destined directly to SMEs and startups. The support mechanisms have included:

The Epicenter Acceleration Program, with aids of up to € 42,400 per company for the development of solutions.

The epicenter Academy, with more than 60 hours of training and mentoring, valued at € 6,850 per participant.

In total, more than 1 million euros have been distributed to promote the innovation and digital and sustainable transformation of beneficiary companies.

Apart from the financial and educational support, Epicenter has promoted the internationalization of SMEs through three exploratory missions in Colombia, the United Kingdom and the United States, with the aim of opening new markets and cooperation opportunities.

The project also featured visibility and networking spaces, such as the two galas held in Barcelona (September 2024) and Naples (March 2025), which have served to present results and strengthen the connection between innovation ecosystems.

Epicenter results confirm the potential of cluster cluster collaboration as a tool to accelerate green and digital transition at European level. The figures achieved and the alliances generated leave a more competitive, better connected SMEs and the capacity to reach new international markets.

With the closing of the project, the Digital Cluster and its partners lays the foundations to continue working on future European initiatives aimed at consolidating a more sustainable and digitized business fabric.
